Granola markets itself as the AI notepad for overloaded executives, the salve for back-to-back Zoom marathons. Fire up the Mac app, grant it calendar access, and the software records every “um,” “circle-back,” and “synergy” uttered in your meeting. Seconds later you get a tidy, bulleted brief. The catch? Every note is born with a publicly reachable URL, and the company keeps the audio for model training unless you hunt through two sub-menus to stop it. That gap between marketing promise and engineering reality is where sensitive IP leaks, compliance audits fail, and regulators start asking uncomfortable questions.
One Checkbox, One URL, One Breach Waiting to Happen
Granola’s privacy page claims notes are “private by default.” Technically, the link is randomly generated, but it is still indexable. A user who copy-pastes the URL into Slack risks exposing it to search-engine crawlers or a curious insider with a simple guessable UUID pattern. No password gate. No SSO requirement. No audit log of who opened the link. In enterprise terms, the surface area is indistinguishable from an S3 bucket left open on the public internet. The difference: S3 has ACLs; Granola has a toggle buried under “Share → Advanced → Require Sign-in.”
Security teams evaluating SaaS usually look for SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 certifications. Granola has neither. Instead, it relies on a shortened penetration-test summary and a promise to “anonymize” voice data. Anonymization, however, is not removal; voiceprints are biometric identifiers under GDPR and CCPA. If a note contains a VP’s unredacted social-security number or a product roadmap, the liability travels with the URL, not with Granola.

The client app POSTs a WebM audio blob to api.granola.ai/transcribe. The server returns a JSON payload containing the markdown note and a pre-signed CloudFront URL valid for seven days. Granola’s terms grant the company a “perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license” to use “de-identified” data for improving its models. De-identification here means stripping the user email from the JSON, not the actual voice. In practice, the company keeps the original Opus audio for thirty days, runs a speaker-diarization model, then fine-tunes its internal Llama-derived LLM on the resulting text. Users can opt out only via a support ticket; there is no self-serve toggle. Compare that with Slack’s AI training opt-out that ships as a single-click admin setting. The asymmetry is glaring.
European customers face additional risk. The Irish Data Protection Commission has already signaled that “legitimate interest” cannot be invoked for post-hoc model training. A single complaint could trigger a cross-border investigation, and fines reach 4 % of global turnover. Granola’s 2025 seed round was $7 M; a GDPR penalty could erase twice that.
Competitive Landscape: Privacy as a Differentiator
Otter.ai moved to end-to-end encryption for enterprise tenants in late 2025. Notion AI keeps user data inside the VPC and offers SAML-based link gating. Start-ups often trade security for speed, but the window for forgiveness is closing. Venture investors now demand a “security datasheet” before Series A. Missing SOC 2 can add six months to an enterprise sales cycle—death for a product that sells to security-conscious CIOs.
Red-Team Walk-Through: Weaponizing the Link
Step 1: Attacker scrapes the public Slack channels of a target company, searching for granola.ai URLs with a simple regex. Step 2: Paste each URL into a headless Chrome instance to render the markdown.
